Common questions

Leather patterns, answered straight.

What is the best leather pattern for a beginner?

Start with the No.54 Minimalist Card Holder ($8) or the No.52 Vertical Wallet ($10). Both are an evening's work: a handful of straight cuts, one row of hand stitching, and a free build-along video that walks every step. Most first-timers finish the card holder in two to three hours.

What tools do I need to start leathercraft?

You can start for under $40: a sharp utility knife, two harness needles, waxed thread, contact cement, a ruler, and something to cut on. No sewing machine and no expensive stamping tools. Every pattern includes the exact tool list for that build.

What leather should I use for these patterns?

Vegetable-tanned full-grain leather, usually 3 to 5 oz for wallets. We cut our own retail goods from Wickett & Craig veg-tan, and a wallet takes about $15 worth of leather, so one hide covers many builds.

How do print-at-home PDF leather patterns work?

You get an instant PDF download. Print it at 100% scale on standard letter paper (larger patterns tile across pages), glue or tape it to your leather, and cut along the full-size cut lines. Every stitch hole is marked, so the stitching lines up the way it does on our own goods. Patterns include lifetime updates.

Do the patterns include instructions?

Yes. Every pattern comes with a free step-by-step build-along video that shows the full construction, from cutting to the final stitch. If you get stuck, email us and a human who makes things will answer.

Can I sell the leather goods I make from these patterns?

The patterns are for personal use and learning the craft; make the designs your own before you sell. When people start asking to buy your work, our Start Selling Your Leatherwork course ($97) covers pricing, photography, Etsy, craft fairs, and landing your first ten sales.
